Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT) is increasingly being informed by Indigenous voices and perspectives, especially as scholars seek to deepen and decolonize relational frameworks in psychology, education, and social sciences.

While RCT originated in Western feminist   psychology—particularly through the work of Jean Baker Miller and the Stone Center—it shares core values with many Indigenous worldviews, such as:

  • Interconnectedness
  • Mutual empathy
  • Community-centered healing
  • Respect for relational integrity

Indigenous Relationality as a Foundation

Scholars like Matt Wildcat and Daniel Voth emphasize that relationality is central to Indigenous intellectual traditions but must be understood within the   specific cultural and linguistic contexts of each Indigenous nation. They caution against pan-Indigenous generalizations and advocate for place-based, culturally grounded relational methods. [journals.sagepub.com]

Relational Ethics and Responsibility

Indigenous teachings, such as the Seven Grandfather Teachings from the Potawatomi and Ojibwe peoples, offer a relational ethic rooted in values like wisdom, respect, humility, and truth. These teachings align with RCT’s emphasis on mutual growth and responsibility in relationships. [www.jstor.org]

  Decolonizing Relational Models

Indigenous scholars are contributing to a relational turn in research and sustainability science, urging that relationality be understood not just as a method, but as a way of being that includes non-human entities, land, and spirit. This expands RCT’s scope beyond interpersonal dynamics to ecological and spiritual dimensions. [www.tandfonline.com]

  Accountability and Community

Indigenous relational frameworks emphasize accountability to community and reciprocity, which challenges Western individualism and informs more collective, healing-centered approaches to therapy and research.   [www.antico...ibrary.org]
